Blacktop Vs. Asphalt
The terms blacktop and asphalt are sometimes used synonymously, although there is a distinction. The components utilized to create blacktop and asphalt are identical. Both are composed of two elements: bitumen and crushed rock. The distinction lies in the process through which the final product is produced utilizing those ingredients.
The asphalt is blended in a drum that must maintain a minimum temperature of 250 degrees Fahrenheit. The asphalt is malleable enough to spread over roads at this temperature. Furthermore, the high temperature ensures that the asphalt will be robust enough to withstand automobile traffic.
The asphalt on Blacktop is blended with a different ratio of bitumen and crushed stone. The proportion of natural crushed stone added to the mix for blacktop is greater. The sparkle on the surface of a blacktop road comes from the crushed stone. The blacktop is also heated to a greater temperature, generally 300 degrees Fahrenheit or more. As a result, the lifespan of a blacktop surface can be quite extended.
